The Alopecia Areata Universal is an autoimmune disease, characterized by the loss of hair and complete hair of the whole body.
It affects patients in an acute way (hair loss is seen in a few weeks) or in a slower way (hair loss can progress up to two years).
Normally patients do not recover from hair loss and the disease becomes chronic.
Universal Alopecia can affect patients of both sexes and of any age. Patients suffering from Alopecia Universal usually have associated psychological consequences (anguish, sadness) that are particularly serious in children and women.
Currently in the European Union there is 2.5 of every 10,000 people suffering from Alopecia Universal, according to the information provided by the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP). This means that only in Spain there are more than 15,000 patients with Universal Alopecia.
